Traffic science struggles to keep cars flowing on highways in D.C. and elsewhere
Traffic science is one of those disciplines that seems permanently poised on the verge of a breakthrough. Professional journals regularly publish promising research, and the press trumpets their importance. In 1999, The Post reported that scientists had gathered at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico to solve our national traffic problem ? just as an earlier generation of physicists had done to build the atomic bomb. And yet driving on the Beltway is still about as enjoyable as cleaning out your ears with a lemon reamer.

Summer fitness and adventure destinations in the D.C. region
This weekend, I?ll be taking part in a time-honored Washington tradition: getting out of town.
To most folks, that means hitting the beach. But my husband and I are headed to my in-laws? place in Cambridge, Md., a town on the Eastern Shore where you won?t see anyone baking in the sand. Instead, we?ll be strolling along the banks of the Choptank River, bird-watching at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and riding bikes on country roads.

I find that most people in health policy agree with that assessment, but rarely do [...]

Healthful barbecue dishes, from Food Network host Ellie Krieger
With the Fourth of July coming up this weekend, my editor, Nathan, had an idea. ?What if we offered advice on how to make backyard barbecuing more healthful while still keeping it recognizable?? he suggested, adding, parenthetically, ?I?ve been to barbecues with only veggie burgers; that wasn?t fun.?
That?s the whole idea behind Eat, Drink & Be Healthy, of course: figuring out ways to eat more healthfully while still having fun. And I agree about veggie burgers: They?re fine for once in a while, but on this major backyard-barbecue weekend, I want to sink my teeth into something more satisfying.
